So far, no religion has come out saying that legal benefits should be forbidden purely on the grounds of gender. Rather, those that do argue that they are trying to ban homosexuality. Yet, none of the laws against same-sex marriage prevent homosexuals from getting married. Instead, they only ban couples on the basis of gender.

But to answer your implied question, only the most fundamental sects of each religion are opposed to civil unions. Fundamentalist Christian, including devout Catholics, Orthodox Jews, etc.

Most of the moderate elements of the major religions, including most Christian denominations, are open to the idea. Including Methodists, Presbyterians, Pentacostals, some Protestant and Anglican sects, and so on.

The fact that many religious people refuse to acknowledge this is just another example of how they pick and choose what facts they belief to justify their conclusions.
