The "Heights" have had the reputation for being a high crime area for quite some time. Law enforcement has made some progress. If you have a family I'd suggest talking to a local cop. They know more about specific areas. If your single go for it.

It depends what criteria you are using for "good." Washington Heights is certainly not one of the safest neighborhoods of the city to live in, but it isn't the most dangerous either. If you live near the 168 St. subway station the express can get to Midtown pretty quickly, but the locals take so long you might as well live in Queens if you are looking for something cheap.

There is a heavy hispanic population, mostly Dominican, so if you aren't hispanic yourself and think you'd feel uncomfortable being in a minority, well there you go.

Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters are beautiful, but kind of a hike from where you'd likely end up living.

I agree with asking for more specific info about specific blocks, as some will be a lot safer than others. Also agree on trying Harlem if you are already looking at WH.

You're better off in Harlem. Harlem has gotten a lot better and it's mixed now. Washington Heights to me isn't the greatest.
