Washington, D.C., is the capital of the United States. Upon ratification of the Constitution, New York City was the capital (1789-1790). Philadelphia was the next capital (1790-1800). Washington, D.C., which was built to serve as the capital of the new country, has been the capital ever since 1800.
Each state, of course, has its own capital.

Washington D.C. However, the power base of the United States has spread to states like California, and New York. The media is located primarily in those two states, and as much of political clout is drawn from mass media, that's where the power generally stays a lot of times.
