I have a 10 gallon tank which holds a Black Moor and another type of goldfish. The other type of goldfish is showing signs of possible Ich infection. It has these white fungus looking things growing on him. They're look very similiar to the tops of Dandelions.

I searched for a treatment and found one with heat and salt. I put the fish in a separate 1 gallon tank with 3 teaspoons of salt. (I put water conditioner in the tap water first.) I also raised the water temperature to 80 degrees. He is still very inactive and is only staying at the top of the water.

My Black Moor was exremely inactive the last day or so when the other fish was with it. Since I took the fish out for treatment, the Black Moor has been swimming all around and is very playful. Any ideas to what could have been wrong, or what is wrong?

Ich is due to stress and poor water quality. Each goldfish will need about 20 gallons of water when there bigger. They produce a lo of ammonia, so you have to change he water a lot if there in a tank that small!! Good luck!!

It is not ich or velvet, ich is white spots that are actually little parasites under the fish's slime coat feeding on his juices. They look like grains of salt all over your fish. They are fatal if untreated. Velvet looks like gold dust sprinkled over your fish's body. Also fatal if untreated.

What your fish has is a fungus. If you heat the water, it will drive out the oxygen and your fish will suffocate. That is why he is hanging at the top of the water, there is a little more O2 up there close to the surface. Get an air stone in there right away.

Salt is a helpful addition to other treatments, but will not cure either ich, velvet or a fungus. You should get a medication for it at the pet store and treat it, right away, according to the directions on the bottle.

Good luck!

I believe you asked a question related to this trouble you are having the other day. I posted some Ich/Ick treatment info for you, and hope it does help, but if these white spots are looking like the crown of a flower (as opposed to the look of the fish having been salted) then it could possibly be Velvet or something similar. Also - this is not a fungus, but a parasite most likely, or maybe bacterial. If it was fungus it would have a cottony look to it.

Tell you what - give this site a look over. It's Virbac Animal Health. They make all different kinds of meds for your aquarium, and have really good descriptions attached to their medical listings so you can narrow down the symptoms you are seeing.

http://www.virbacpets.com/

When you go there - click on the brand called "Mardel". This is the consumer line of products that can be bought either from your LFS or online. It's going to take you some reading to find what is best to use, but I would recommend starting with the products called "Maracyn". Specifically Maracyn-2 (as this is a broad spectrum Antibiotic for all kinds of topical parasitic infections).

Continue with the Salt even if it isn't Ich/Ick (as this will aid the fishes gill functions during this stressful time - the dosage you are using should still be fine to use during this treatment time).

Hope all works out for you. Also - before I forget - please join Aquaria Central. It is a hobbyist site and out in the forums there are absolutely TONS of very knowledgeable hobbyists that can help you out a lot more than the info you will find out here. I will list their site down in my sources for you (along with the Virbac site again as well).

Good luck and hope to see you out on AC!

Hmmm... it does look like Ich, but I really don't understand about the Black Moore - why he suddenly became active! Buy some Ich or fungus treatment for the other type of goldfish; but I suggest that you treat the other fish too. It is a good idea to use salt, but why heat? If the weather is hot in your area right now, the fish might instead prefer cooold water. My goldfish passed away because of the weather (although he didn't have that Ich symptom). Anyway, check out the TetraHole: http://www.geocities.com/TetraHole Maybe you'll find some answers to your questions there. Good luck!
