Scientology is based on a SCIENCE FICTION book. It started as a scam and a tax shelter.
As you know, actors are paid to briefly enact a fantasy whether it's on television, film, or the stage. For whatever reason the line between fantasy and reality starts to blur for some of them. Or they start to believe their own press and see themselves as more than human or as having an inside track that is unavailable to everyone else. In short, they kind of go bonkers and suffer delusions of grandeur. They think they have to save someone or something so they develop "causes".
Scientology was science fiction fantasy used as a prop for a tax shelter. It's classified as a church and therefore entitled to all the benefits any other church enjoys under the law. That means it's members can contribute to the "church" and writeoff their tithes or contributions on their taxes. The difference with the Celebrity Scientology Center or Church is that the celebrities enjoy much more there than what people traditionally think of as a "church" enviroment. More like a luxury hotel\country club.
Unfortunately Mr. Cruise, who seemed to have a fatal belief in his own press as a iconic actor, developed a need to have a cause celeb which in his case is Scientology. He felt that his status as an actor would make people blindly follow his leading and belief in Scientology. To make matters worse, the whole time he was crusading, he made detrimental remarks about others and that, combined with his weird behavior caused him to crash and burn.
Which goes to show you that being an actor doesn't necessarily equate with intelligence.

I couldn't agree with you more! Scientology is a CULT and ironically the "auditing" that is referred to is actually a form of psychotherapy, which scientologists claim is baloney! There are a lot of horror stories about scientologists and how they operate, and the recommendations about not seeing psychiatrists because its all BS coming from Tom Cruise is actually DANGEROUS. The good news is that the word is out about the "children of Xenu" and I think their days are numbered. They claim 10 million members, but its more like half a million. Type "Tom Cruise is an idiot" in your search window and you will find expose's of scientology and scientologists - its bunk and anybody with sense will figure that out.

Any type of religion "can" get people crazy. Even proper Christianity or Catholicism can produce extreme people. Besides, what do you want to happen? When you say "looked into", what are you expecting to happen? Scientology has not broken any laws so they cannot be locked up or shut down.
I do not agree with extremists in this world, but I cannot shut down their religion because I feel that they are "crazy". That is the idea of democracy and freedom. Everyone is entitled to the right to choose whatever religion they want, even if they go crazy from it. As long as they do not break the law, everything is fine.

Most cults fit that description. Remember Jim Jones and the koolaid? How about Charles Manson and HIS followers -- THAT was a really sinister example of brainwashing. Crazy people are out there, everywhere. If that's what they want to believe, there's nothing we can do to change their minds. We just need to make sure we don't get trapped by any of them.

Its a pretty weird cult that changes people. I mean I have a question of my own which is does anyone just get mail from the temple or does that mean you are involved with Scientology cause i found that my uncle had mail from Scientology temple and i kinda freaked out. I mean they brainwash ppl and drive them insane. Its not a cult i want to explore for sure.

"Auditing" makes people feel better, and more connected. The Catholic church gets the same result with confession.
It's not a crime. It's even okay of people don't go overboard. The problem is that some people do go overboard with this. I rather suspect that L. Ron Hubbard became afraid of what he'd made, so he added odd nonsensical elements (Xenu, space plane DC-8) to the "religion" to try and convince people to wake up and use their heads. It backfired, and Hubbard spent the last few years of his life as a near-hermit.

As successful as Tom Cruise is, he really has a confidence problem, in which he constantly needs approval of others. Why does he need to put down somebody else, like Brook Shields, to get his points across? Sounds like someone needs to see a psychologist, but does not believe in psychology itself. The ironies just won't end....

i know... it's more like a cult. it's supported by rich celebrities, so it looks like it's not. it's just plain stupidity and narrow. you cannot limit your options to whatever you believe alone. like the case when he insulted brooke shields for taking anti-depressants -- yeah, medicines are not good, but there are things that are just beyond your control.
i've read an article about a regular person who was a scientologist and it was not good. whatever you see in celebrities is not the actual concept behind it. reading the article, that's how i started to think it was a cult -- they actually lock people in to prevent them from going out or changing their minds.

If you have read anything - it should be that Scientology was created by a Sci-Fi writer as a joke and people have just picked it up... it really is a crazy stupid thing.
