I have a water softener and I add liquid softener and sometimes even use a dryer sheet. It's really bad on the towels, and when you dry off with them... it's bad! Please, help!

You may just need to clean the outlets and fabric drawers.

I had this problem, not when drying, but when washing and I found out there was build up of old washing powder leading down into the machine. I used a blunt knife and a toothbrush to clean it, then ran a couple of rinse cycles and the problem went.
If you are using a dryer, they usually come with some kind of filter, check that that isn't clogged or has something growing there.
Finally, if you can, pull your machine out and remove the pipes (turning the water off first) and flush them through.

Hopefully this will work...... Good luck x

A sure-fire way to rid the smell: if your towels & washcloths have that musty odor, wash in the washing machine with regular detergent as you normally would. Do not add liquid fabric softener though; instead, add 1 cup of ammonia to the load during the rinse cycle. Dry immediately. This will rid the smell. IT REALLY DOES WORK!

It's either that your clothes are mildewed prior to your wash....but I believe it is your water source....try putting a box of Arm & Hammer baking soda in with a wash and see where that gets you.

Remove clothes promptly once the washing is done.
Leave the washer's door open in between washings, so it can dry.
Use less - much less - fabric softener, and only occasionally.

If you leave them sitting in the washer too long, they will grow mildew. Take them out right after they're done and get them in the dryer.

By any chance do you store the towels in the bathroom? They will smell if you do. Problem is everytime someone bathes or showers the bathroom fills with steam(even with the fan on) the steam will condense on the towels and then they starrt to smell.

Are you letting the clothes dry completely? Because if they're still damp, it's going to smell like that. Make sure the cothes are 100% dry...

Do you leave the clothes in the washer for a day or two???? That would do it.Also leave the washer lid open so the washer dries out inside.

Try running your washing machine with a "small" cycle of water and a 16 oz bottle of white vinegar.
