Since all living things can trace their ancestry back to a single ancester, we (meaning all living things), share some dna. It seems like it might be possible to have a gene that could theoretically cause the change to take place in humans, even though there has never been a recorded case of it.

No, in our case, we are missing the genetic material that makes us the other sex (the XY chromosomes). In order to actually morph from one sex to another, you'd have to do system-wide gene therapy to change the genetic code of every cell in the body, and then activate stem cells to begin developing into the missing sexual organs. That's why plastic surgery and hormone therapy are required for those desiring a sex change -- they don't become a functional transsexual because they don't have the organs, only the appearance of them.

I was thinking about this a week or two ago. I was thinking about how in the future when we are picking the genes of children before they are born (like in the movie Gattaca) then we will start to tinker with humanity and reproduction and I'll bet that eventually we will decide to make humanity one gender and cause ourselves to be able to reproduce asexually. And like you said, there will be MANY benefits of such a society. I think one gender that reproduces asexually is the future of humanity. Best wishes :)
