One of the first things to do is to find the source of the problem...... for that, I suggest a visit to http://www.pcpitstop.com and run their online optimisation scan.

The next thing you'll most likely have to do is some routine PC Maintenance.

1) Run "ScanDisk" + "Defragmenter" (I believe they've been combined into one tool on Windows XP).

2) Run your Anti-Virus & anti-Spyware software (you DO have Anti-virus & anti-spyware software, don't you?).
If not, go get ZONEALARM INTERNET SECURITY SUITE from http://www.zonelabs.com

3) Check your start-up files (Start > Run >MsConfig), and make sure there isn't any unnecessary extra cr*p loading at start-up and hogging memory...... before unticking any of the boxes, if you're unsure of what something is, look it up on a Search Engine first (e.g. GOOGLE or YAHOO).

Restart your computer. That usually helps. Remove unnecessary programs from the startup (Run msconfig and remove the extra programs). Run good anti-virus and anti-spyware scans. Don't run too many applications at the same time, unless you really, really need all of them simultaneously.
I'm using a 5-yr old Celeron 800, and it still zooms! Maintain your pc well, and you'll be surprised how long it will serve you!

you probable have viruses and spyware (spyware). It got here approximately to me, too. pass to Spybot seek and wreck and sign up as a member. Then pass into the communicate board and post your project. An experienced tech will walk you thru a customised sparkling-up on your equipment to get rid of what's ruining your pc. this is going to take some week to get all of it wiped sparkling out, in spite of the shown fact that it's going to be sooooo rather worth some time and skill. The provider at Spybot is loose and in the event that they assist you, they ask purely which you think approximately making a donation. I did, they saved my pc. in addition they'll propose loose protection classes on your pc to maintain you sparkling. in case you postpone, you're able to desire to wind up with a great paper weight on your palms. Do it now.

You know that SOMETHING is slowing you down... Go to:

Start/All Programs/StartUp and see what's in there. Delete anything that you don't HAVE to have

Go down to the taskbar (beside the clock) and right click on each thing, turn it off unless you need it.

Defragment your drive
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools

There are more invasive things to do
Start/Run/msconfig but if you don't know what you're doing, leave that alone.
