Newer phones absolutely have better reception. And even with newer phones the reception varies. The size of the phone doesn't usually make a difference but manufacturers do. I would stick with Nokia or Motorola for best reception. The RAZR styles have the antenna in the bottom portion away from some of the other components that might interfere. I wouldn't expect a pull antenna to help much. Calling Cingular to complain might prompt them to adjust their cell site settings to improve reception. An indoor repeater would help also.
Also, make sure your phone has the latest software.

The phones reception has nothing to do with the model of the phone.
The reception is only as good as the service you are subscribed to. In your case "cingular".
All handheld mobile phones are 1/10 of a watt. The only thing you could try is a booster kit to bump it up to a full 3- watts, however this is expensive.
Next time do research into who has the best service coverage area where you are going to be using the phone before going into another service carrier contract.

Firs things first. The pull out ariel thing is a fallacy. It makes no difference to a digital signal.
Secondly, Yes, some phones are obviously better than others. The phones design, position of antenna in relations to other components, what the phone is made of, the quality of the parts... it all counts.
Nokias are normally quite good. The only real way to tell is to try friends phones. You can put your SIM in their phone if need be

well, cingular is the best in my opinion, but it depends on what kind of phone you have, for example, i have a 20 dollar phone, but my uncle, who has a RZR, has less coverage than i do. So it matters what kind of phone, like the model...but i would stick with cingular...they are pretty good.

that is a great question....from what i understand they all have the same antenae features...but it would be a good thing to ask someone who knows....i guess. I used to wander about that also. But you can get signal boosters fro ANY phone still as far as i know...they help to increase the receptivity of your cell phone.

Well, sure. And it also depends on your service provider as well.
