There is an on-line "netiquette" which basically says that people in IM and places like this don't necessarily need to worry about spelling and should be given some leeway. I don't always make sure what I write on the web is perfect.
As for the schools, there are of course issues because no system is perfect. I don't think people today spell any better or worse then previous generations. It's all about individuals taking the time to spell check. Though I think spelling was taking more seriously before the computers 'spell check' came along (even though I love it).
I am young, but I see typos from people who are much older. I don't think it has anything to do with age but with effort and many people don't value grammar (which is unfortunate), but the words behind or actions of others are really what matter. As for the country I guess everyone will have to wait and see what happens.

When my sons were in school I was appalled to find that spelling just wasn't important. I didn't let them get away with misspelling words in any of their homework assignments. The ability to communicate properly is a big part of being a civilized society. Modern technology has added to this crisis. Emails and text messages have brought about a plethora of shorthand and mangled spelling. Some companies are making their employees take remedial English courses. With the availability of Spell Check here on Answers, there's no reason for the horrors in spelling I've encountered.

After reading some of the answers here, I think the one point overlooked by most is the fact that YA is a form of release/escape for most people here.
In all honesty I think that anyone expecting only serious answers to questions needs to consider that this is a free site and that means all are welcome to participate. If you have serious questions maybe you should choose a more selective area in which to ask them.
For those who wish to share real information and serious answers, maybe you should start your own area and be more cautious who you allow to participate in the Q & A.
All in all, I see many people (of ALL ages) who want someone else to do their thinking for them.... it's not just the younger generations.
You are never given a wish without being given the power to make it true~
You may have to work for it, however.

I have to say that I agree, I realize that sometimes a mistake is only a typographic error, anyone can do that. But I have been seeing people spell "does" as "dose" and "girl" as "gurl". Those aren't abbreviations, the words have just as many letters. Maybe its some new way of spelling that I'm not aware of.

You know what gets me - someone posts a completely asinine question that has no real basis or relevance to anything (I post things like that just for fun) and they get like a bazillion responses. But you post something that requires thought or introspection and you get two types of answers: People lashing out at you and try to demoralize you for bringing up valid pointd about certain things (especially the environment so I've noticed) or you jut get idiotic responses. Either way, you don't get nearely as many answers as would had you asked if you think tunafish shop on eBay.

It's not just the grammar and spelling, it's the absolute incoherence that amazes me. It's hard enough to read through and try to discern what the sentence would look like if correctly written - but then you realize it makes absolutely no sense anyway.

Dear:
Can you demonstrate????????, You wrote demostrate!!!!!!
Are you a product from the schools you talk about?, because I am and I am very proud of it. Your learning and all habilities you have you develop them by the interest you put towards them, does not matter where you are or come from.

I agree somewhat. The spelling and grammar is atrocious. The sick immoral question content bothers me the most. I can't believe my eyes when I read some of the sick things some people find amusing.

You are very observant. I see simple math questions, word meanings (ever heard of a dictionary?), where are countries located, etc. On top of that, the educators are screaming they need more money for the schools !
Yes it is a frightening situation.

I TOTALLY agree! I'd be on here all day if I wanted to fix every grammatical error. The most frustrating one to me is the misuse of the words, "your" and "you're". IT'S NOT THAT COMPLEX!!!!!!!!!! I'VE KNOWN THIS SINCE GRADE SCHOOL!!!!!!!! I think the biggest problem is more and more people are watching TV, or playing video games instead of reading
