I read that if your computer is already infected, antivirus software in your own comp might be bypassed already and will miss it, so you have to scan from another computer.

It is true that certain malicious files can disable your antivirus program(s). But, you don't necessarily need another computer to scan your hard drive. There are two options that I recommend. Option 1, you scan your computer with an online virus scanner. This is of course only works if your computer can connect to the Internet. I recommend using Trend Micro's Housecall since it scans for both viruses and spyware. In addition, Housecall scans and removes viruses for free. (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/)

Most other online scanner will scan your computer but you have to pay to remove the viruses.

Option 2, you can install portable ClamWin on to a jump drive (a.k.a. thumb drive) and use it to scan your computer. ClamWin is an open source antivirus software program. It can run from a jump drive or a CD disk. You can download the program at: http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable

Before scanning, make sure to update the virus signatures. The program offers three options: scan only, scan and quarantine suspicious files or scan and delete suspicious files. I recommend you use the scan and quarantine suspicous files. You can select it using the settings (a.k.a configuration) menu.

Well, good luck. If you need more information then just drop me a line.

The easiest way is to install the hardrive as a slave in another computer. Or you can network the computers and set the entire infected hardrive to be a network share and scan it that way, but it is rather slow!

This can be done over a network, or by removing the infected computer's hard drive and attaching it to another computer.
