There are two definitions
1) a person who likes to dress and act differently to the other people in society, normally in black but some like much brighter colours. They tend to be thinkers and more often than not quite creative. They have a satyrical sense of humour, and are able to laugh at both themselves and other people. This type of goth originated in the late 80's with the "death" of punk; goths back then liked the style and the "protection" it offered and so emulated it in their own style. They listen to and appreciate all sorts of good music. They can be gay/depressed/weird/mentally disturbed, but more often than not they are just normal people.
2) an offshoot of the nu-metal clique who think that to *really* piss off their parents they'll dress all in black and talk about death and suicide whilst listening to Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and Slipknot because it's "cool". They tend to have very little idea of the other type of goths (or anything else other than themselves for that matter) and will probably change their fashion once it becomes "uncool" again. A feeling of depression and rejection. I was a goth for a couple of years and it was because I felt rejected by the norm. There are many ways of coping with life and everyone is different. Some people try to be accepted, others choose to be rejected and live with the fact. One of my friends commited suicide when he was 19 because he felt so rejected and he was a goth too. It's not a call for help don't get me wrong it's just a statement that they have been pushed aside and they would rather join there own group than try to be something that they're not. Everyone has their own group that they feel content in. Never take individuality away from a person as it is what keeps them going.

Gothic isn't really about a certain type of music. It's not really about a certain type os "style" either. Yes, most gothic people wear baggy, dark clothes. It's more about their personality. their feelings for the world and people around them. I know a few people who wear dark clothes and listen to music that is usually associated with "gothic" people, but they aren't gothic. You basically can't judge someone or say they are gothic without getting to know them first. True goths seem to hate the world, and feel like they don't have a reason to live. Pathetic, in my opinion, but nonetheless, its about personality, not style.

The gothic image is all about what kind of personality you have or it could be the music you enjoy the most. Some are nice and some are bad people. It's like being a punk rocker with all the color hair spray and the black lipstick.

Like Chavs, townies, Sloane Rangers, hippies, etc, it's a personal preference to dress that way and should be respected if no ones getting hurt. They often prefer rock / metal music, but not always. Some just really really love the colour black!

In adolescence despair seems glamorous. It is proof of not being an innocent child any more. The Goth image is attaching oneself to a style that dramatically communicates one's response to a society without valid, profound meanings to offer. Unfortunately, focusing on the negative spawns depression.

It's usually a product of someone trying to find themselves because their parents didn't give them an identity or a feeling of self-worth, so they act it out by wearing all black.
In a nutshell, whether most don't want to admit it or not, it's an attention thing. Children need positive attention while growing up. If they don't get it then, they will seek it out in different ways, and that is just one of the ways.

Just a fad for kids to fit in.
Seems funny that although they are trying not to conform, they are just going along (or conforming to) another group.
I think it will be fun when they get to look back at old pictures of themselves and laugh when they say "oh yeah thats right, I was into goth for 2 years."

I have asked young people this question within my family and they conclude the make up is usually worn by insecure people who don't really like their appearance, so they opt out with an apparently pseudo deep vibe, to make themselves seem more interesting than they think they really are. I'm not sure though!!!!
