I met this young woman today(18), who informed me that she, and many other people from her college, choose not to vote.
I mean how shocking is that???
Her reasoning was that she thought politics was boring, and that her vote could not make a difference. What shocked me the most is the fact that she is a lesbian- please forgive me for sounding naive but, i just assumed that every gay person made a vote, right?!
Then, when I prompted her to tell me the party she would most likely consider, her response: CONSERVATIVE!!!
Can you believe it?
People, please tell me you vote. And for those of you who don't, tell me why.
Thank you.
Also, are there of you who vote conservative? do tell...

I am writing about British politics.
Of course, I am not being judgemental- i myself am a lesbian. I believe that all people should vote, particularly gay people, women etc...

yes, I do vote, I'm a 43 yr old lesbian, and hell no! I am NOT a conservative! we have to get out there and make a difference!
I just don't get the "Log Cabin Republicans." I mean, being a conservative homosexual is about as crazy as someone black joining the KKK, don't you think? sorta like sleeping with the enemy.... (I think a lot of gays/lesbians would agree with that!)

Hmmm, can't say I have an answer for you there as far as America is concerned. I'm an Aussie and it's compulsory here. Go to your local court, school etc and get your name marked off a list. Doesn't matter if you vote for Marvin the Martian (like I did for our last state election). As long as you have your name marked off, you won't get fined. Once you put your name on the electoral roll at 17, you are required when you turn 18 to vote every time. I never understood why America is optional when it comes to voting.
And I'm a liberal (so to speak) voter. But I won't actually vote for the Liberal party because our PM is Liberal and he said that as long as he is in office, we will never be able to legally marry here in Australia. A liberal Prime Minister with conservative views... go figure. The fact he'd have to be at least 65 and still in the old "mindset" really doesn't help matters..... Think I'll shut up now *lol*

lets just set a few things straight: are you talking british conservatives or american conservatives? in america they have two main parties: one (the republicans) are strict conservatives, and the other (the democrats) are still a very conservative party by world standards. if you're in america and think that democrats are liberal then you're very wrong.
if you're british then i'm a little confused. in the last 15 years (forget about thatcher) have the conservatives tried to bring in any hardline anti-gay policies? did they object to the legalisation of gay civil partnerships? no
why are you so mad she said conservatives? i thought gays were all different, came from different walks of life, and didn't all get on. why did you assume every gay person made a vote? because you like to think a higher percentage of gays vote? because you think because you vote it makes you intelligent? yes, she should be voting (i'm all for using our democratic society - and all for having the right not to vote) but what does the fact that she was gay have ANYTHING to do with it?
in actuality, the reason she probably doesn't vote, and the reason she said conservative was probably because she's an apathetic college student. she isn't interested in politics and about the only thing she does know about it is that labour went to iraq, ergo, they are bad. a pseudo-liberal. if she put any consideration into her answer she would have said labour or the liberal democrats* she's liberal but because she's too apathetic won't vote and sees the consevatives as the only real options
*as the old saying goes, if you're in your 20s and not voting liberal, you're heartless; if you're in your 30s and STILL voting liberal, you're an idiot
Tracer: you're what's called a social liberal and a political conservative

I thought you gays were open minded about judging other people . I did not vote in this last election because Bush carried my state by so much that my vote (and 50,000) friends would not have given up the electorial vote of my state. If it were a popular vote for the whole U.S.A. then my vote would count. When you get all or none of the state it may not matter.

i think this is because politicians dont have an impact on the young people of today. Due to this they do come across as boring etc. I'm a lesbian and i know some of my gay/lesbian friends wont vote just as some single mothers or people from ethnic minorities won't. I wont be voting Labour............

These are the same people who complain about people in office and the way things are going today. I do vote conservatively, but I am gay and care about who gets into office. Gay, Straight, liberal, conservative, we all need to vote

Well theres not much point if you ask me.
I would vote for the bnp but they have no chance of getting in power so its pretty much a wasted vote.
There is Labour or Conservative and they are both just a bunch of idiots I don't see any reason to vote one above the other. I think we need a lot more choice, I would only vote for the bnp because I do not agree with all this immigration stuff and right now they are the only party I see who are even willing to adress the problem.
So the choice comes down to 2 lots of morons or a bunch of racists. Hardly worth my time to vote then is it.

I do vote, I'm in the middle of Liberal and conservative. I like Joe Lieberman. I'm for a strong military defense and protecting our country like the Repulicans, but am Liberal when it comes to Womens Right to Choice and equal rights for Gays. You can't assume just because someone is Gay that they vote. In America we are all Americans first, sexual orientation comes in under that, and unfortuantely many young Americans don't vote, including Gays. I think they are young and carefree. Later in Life the youth will all vote. That's just the way it has always been.

The Republican party has a very sizable and active group of "you people". They are concerned with excessive taxation and regulation. They are concerned with effective schools and efficient welfare and support programs. They are concerned with a strong national defense and a sensible and responsible (believe me, the UN can be really, really crooked) international community leadership. The role of government is far, far beyond merely "you people" delighting in being publicly different but "accepted" all the same.
