Try washing your sweatshirt in a gentle cycle, and turn it inside out. Then line dry it. I've been ok so far doing it this way. I have tried Dryel for some of my clothes and it does work.

wash inside out, run on a short &/or delicate cycle, and wash only similar items together. If you don't have a lot of lint makers in the load, the lint attracters don't have as much pilling accumulating. And keep a sweater shaver handy to snip off those pesky pills!

You answered your own question. :) Sweats will always get pills due to the fabric they're made of. A good investment is a great clothes shaver!! I LOVE those things! You COULD try washing on gentle cycle, but I'm not so sure that's gonna help..the fabric is still rubbing itself against itself and that's what causes the pilling.
