I've been to the beaches in and around Progresso (and Cancun & Mayan Rivera) but have not been to Campeche. When I was at Progresso the beaches were nice but the visibility in the water was not that good. There was a fair amount of suspended sand in the water. How are the beaches in Campeche are they about the same as Progresso? Where are the best beaches in the gulf?

No way...

Beaches in Campeche are (under my point of view) the worst and most horrible beache I've ever been. In fact, the entire Gulf of Mexico is not nice (nothing compared to Cancun). I think the best beaches are in veracruz, but because of the city, not the beaches.

Veracruz is near to Tajin (ancient ruins) and Tlacotalpan (one of the 8th UNESCO cities in mexico and one of the most beautiful towns u'll ever seen)

Progreso is one of the most decent ones in the Gulf. There are another ones in Yucatan, they are much more nice, and for no reason go to Cd del Carmen in Campeche, I think is one of the most horribles beaches I've ever been.

Actually, anywhere along the coast in the area of Progresso, Chicxulub, etc. are all about the same. I lived in Chicxulub on the beach for quite some time, and didn't find it attractive from the standpoint of being able to go out and enjoy the beach and water. Progresso only has about a one + mile stretch, and it was fun being there. You also have dozens of guards that patrol that beach and there was never any problems. The beaches in Campeche are about the same as the others. The beach down around Chicxulub is very dirty, lots of litter and quite a few homes that were hit by the hurricane in 2004 are still not restored. You certainly wouldn't enjoy it there. Out of all of them listed, I prefer Progresso. There hasn't been any major storms in the past two years to affect the water there.

The beaches in Campech are certainly not as crystal clear as the carribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, but there are still some wonderful spots.

First, if you liked Progresso, but would rather have the feel of a small fishing town, head just around the corner to Celestun (near the border of Yucatan and Campeche in the NW corner of the peninsula). I suggest staying at the hotel Maria del Carmen, where you can get a room with a small balcony overlooking the sunset-lit gulf for very little money (some with air conditioning, although you usually don't need it here).

But from there, you must jump far to the south in order to catch the next beach. This is because there is a huge stretch of mangrove swamp that borders the gulf coast from Celestun down to Campeche city. So, for Campeche beaches, you should begin looking at spots like Seybaplaya and points further south. The nicest of these (in my opinion) is Sabancuy. However, it has been nearly a decade since I was there. Back then, it was a great beach with no one around for miles.
