Most definitely, revisionist histories to the contrary, although he wasn't called that during his life. Without looking at the man, yes he had flaws like we all do, let's look at what he did. With an army not numbering more than say, the current NYC police dept, he subdued the Greek city-states, destroyed the largest empire of the time, and pressed on to Northen India. Also, picking up Palestine and Egypt.
He founded several cities that flourish to this day, Alexandria Egypt being the most famous.
Militarily there is no doubt he was one of the Great Captains of History. He had a great eye for tactics and strategy, conducting several of what we now would consider "special operations" to achieve his goals (one of the few ancient commanders to consider the impact of a well-planned mission executed by the best-and brightest). Also, he was very politically astute: assimilating the peoples he conquered. No doubt he probably had an IQ that would be considered "genius" today.
He also had some serious personality issues: He didn't like people who were physically unattractive, he was probably an alcoholic, and a narcissist.
