I'm an ASA and we have 5 other sororities at my campus. Which means all 6 of the sororities have 6 different reputations. Sometimes the reputations even match! Basically what I'm trying to say is that each sorority will have a different meaning to each person. I'm a part of one chapter of ASA on my campus and our reputation is totally different than another chapter of ASAs that are in the same state!

All I can tell you to do is go through rush and meet the girls. You will be able to draw conclusions on your own and as corny as it sounds, you will find a place that fits. The best advice you can get is: DON'T TRUST RUMORS! Every sorority is going to have a symbol, a motto, colors, etc. What you have to relate to is the girls and the girls only. I never considered myself a "sorority girl" when I was back in high school, and luckily I joined a sorority with a bunch of laid-back girls who don't consider themselves the "sorority type" either. I love my sisters and because of them I've gotten so involved on campus and enjoy college even though I am far from home.

You can also decide on what you are looking for in a sorority. I'm in a social one, which means we have exchanges and formals and participate on campus, however, there are service sororites as well, as well as fraternities that are co-ed. It's up to you. Ignore the people who tell you Greek life is all about the booze - it's so so so so much more than that. I'm excited you are planning on going Greek. Good luck with your senior year!

Sorority National Reputations

Nationally, Chi Omega has a really good reputation. I was a Phi Mu, so I'm biased on that one. Liked my chapter and think the national is pretty good. I would look at whether their national philathropy is something that you really believe in and see how active their alumni chapters are. Hey, men use their frats to network and I think its something that sororities really miss the boat on.

However, the bottom line is which chapter you feel most comfortable with. Doing research ahead of time is good because you will have questions to ask during rush. Also, ask the upperclassmen you meet in your dorm and around campus what they think of the different sororities.

That's a great question - unfortunately, it really depends which campus you are on. Some sororities have great national reputations - Kappa Alpha Theta, and Pi Beta Phi come to mind. But despite their national reputations, the way they're viewed really depends upon the school. Where are you planning on going?

We had Phi Mu at my college when I was there (Towson) and their nickname was Phi Moo because they were all fat. Im not really into sororities, but just thought I'd share.

They differ at each school. Ask someone who goes there and you can get a realistic response.
