rental ones are OK, depending on the task at hand. If its just regular soiling then they work fine but for heavy duty cleaning I would suggest getting a professional that has a "TRUCK MOUNTED" steam cleaner to do the job. They are very powerful machines and are actual steam cleaners. They adjust to the temperature they need for the job, and leave no water in your carpet (less drying time). Then you can maintain your carpets as needed with a portable unit. Personally I would buy one rather then rent.

i find i like the store-boughten ones better. the rental ones are fine, but just lay down water and suck (most of it) up. the bissel pro-heat is a good one becuase it heats up the water 25 degrees beyond what you put in the tank, which i have found really helps the cleaning process. and it also has the brushes on the front, unlike the rentals. the hoover is also another good one. it doesn't heat the water, but it does have a better brush. the other thing to consider is to buy a GOOD cleaning solution. Of the cheaper ones, I have found that the resolve is the best at cleaning the carpets.

Do it! I did my own carpets that way for years. Its a learning experience and you have full control over the cleaning of your carpet. The rental machines are smaller versions of what the carpet cleaning companies use and just as efficient in my opinion.

Yes, they really work. Get the very heavy, one circular brush type and use a wet-vac afterward. You can easily do two homes in a day with it, so have a neighbor share the rent with you. It always worked for me!

Buy your own, like a Hoover Steam Path. This way, you can clean your carpets whenever you want, and not have to return it. It will pay for itself!

No, they work quite well. Just get one at your local grocery store and go to work.

The cheap ones that the annoying salespeople sell don't work sh*t. But the rental ones work fine :-)

Yes, often times you can do it better than a service... just make sure you don't get a "bottom of the line" one.

they work fine. you'll be disgusted by the color of the water you get out of your carpet.

just take your time and do a thorough job---you'll do fine.
