OK -- let's be objective here.
(1) Wells has been fat his entire life. It didn't stop him from pitching a perfect game.
(2) Wells has playoff experience. He is someone who's dealt with the pressure of taking the mound in big games. When he was with SD, guys like Peavy watched and learned from Wells' composure.
(3) Why do you think L.A., Cincinnnati, St, Louis and the Mets wanted him?
(4) The Padres gave up a prospect who might blossom. However, they have 3 excellent catchers in the majors, and, to borrow an old adage: "The future is now." Piazza, Josh Bard (batting over .300) and Rob Bowen (excellent arm, solid RBI guy).
Now - is Boston waving the white flag?
They are fading, no question. Injuries to Varitek, Pena and the recent health concerns regarding Ortiz and Ramirez are valid ones.

Yes, they have given up but as would any team at this point. Wells had two great starts in a row but he had been requesting a trade to the West Coast during the offseason and odds are that he'll stay there if he doesn't retire. The funny part about this whole thing is that they got a catching prospect even though they traded away perhaps the best catching prospect in the minor league during the offseason. Either that or they need a defensive catcher because Mirabelli and Lopez aren't cutting it defensively and Varitek's recovery will take longer than expected.

The BoSox dealt away a fat, over the hill has been pitcher... and you think THAT is the signal that they have given up?
Did you NOT notice earlier this week when Wily Mo, Manny, and Ortiz ALL went down with physical ailments?

Wells wasnt pitching great or anything.
He's probably going to retire at the end of the year, and if not, he's a free agent so Boston can bring him back.
They -got- something for him instead of losing him for nothing. This was a good move.

I would hardly classify trading an old fat ugly has been as giving up.
