Thats what happens when you expect pple to always try to understand you instead of you trying to understand others. It goes both ways.

Because many people, especially in the West, misunderstand their religious beliefs. Very few high schools offer classes in comparative religion. Very few westerners speak Arabic. The Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs have the same problem. Lots of Protestants don't know much about Catholics, Orthodox Chriatians or Mormons, for that matter.

Because they are misunderstood. The fact that al qaida and all other extremist/insurgent groups r muslims doesnt mean that the rest of the islamic community supports or condones their beleifs/actions. Mainstream islam is radically different than what the extremists r practicing. To name a few differences:

1) All life, in any form, is precious in the beliefs of mainstream islam...
2) Woman are respected, protected and honoured

However, in practice mainstream muslims do not completely abide by the laws and practices of islam, hence it is difficult to find people which can be labeled "true muslims", strenghthening the notion that muslims r as portrayed by extremists

There are two glaring examples, taken from this Answer forum: 1. They make 'fun' of Allah. A gross misunderstanding. In Arabic Bible used by millions of Jews, Christians,Muslims, Allah as the Lord of lords, is used thousands of time. English was not spoken by mylord Jesus. So, the translated word;God was never spoken there. The language closest to his vernacular was Arabic, so he and the patriarchs before worshipped Allah, a prehistoric Name used exclusively for the Mighty Lord whose shape is beyond comprehension.* 2. Often they make 'fun' of the Holy Prophet of Islam by referring to a canard about a six years old wife. This is no where in the Holy Qur'an, not even a passing reference. Such and other misunderstandings are discernable. I am a practiotioner of Inter Religious Dialogue, was President of my country's Association. There we learned how to respect 'the other' religions by looking for the positive aspects only. No criticism, only valid questions to seek clarification. This is the need of the hour, toward World Peace and Understanding. This Yahoo/ forum may please be utilized for the positive good, only... not for disparagement.

Because most people in the west DO understand their religion. Islam has a mandate to covert the world and kill all who won't convert. If that was a fundamental belief of your religion, wouldn't you not want the rest of the world to know? It is most often the people who are well understood by their actions, that claim they are misunderstood. This distracts from their actions and makes them look like victims, instead of the aggressors that they are. It is also a ploy to get westerners, who are sometimes overly compassionate, to think, "well maybe it's our fault they want to destroy us". It is a strategy that works very well.

I think westerners in general do and they have a point, but I think Muslims probably equally misunderstand Christians and Jews.
