Dictionary.com insists that it is using the official scrabble player dictionary to check words played in Literati , yet it is quite obvious the words that have blatantly been censored --- words that might have a so-called vulgar meaning, but have every-day meanings as well. The cock crowed, my friends. To censor that word (and others like it) was ridiculous, and I want to know WHY they did it.

So... even though there is a site for children to play these games, and even though parents should pay attention to what their kids are doing on the internet and even though there a zillion worse sites on the internet where kids could be exposed to truly harmful stuff, they're worried about innocuous words? Words like cock and fag have meanings other than the so-called "vulgar" meaning.

First off, the Offical Scrabble Player's Dictionary 4th edition is made for "Recreational and School Use". That means any vulgar, obscene or degrogatory words have been removed from the dictionary.

But for NSA (National Scrabble Association) sanctioned games, they use the Official Word List, which is the same as the 4th edition dictionary but with all the vulgar words reinstated in it.

Basically it was done to prevent kids (and people that sensitive to vulgarity), from seeing the words and playing them - therefore since anyone (including kids) can play Literati, they use the more "Politically Correct" version of the dictionary.

They did it to appease the people who typically complain about having those words appear.

I agree it is ridiculous.
