You need to tell us how much is being charged first

Afterward reask your question.

Square-shaped hallway is 6' x 6' so you have 36 square feet to work with. Without knowing how much it is per square foot you can't answer the question - unless we're talking algebra.

x=cost per square foot
y=final cost

36x-$25=y

Something is missing from this problem, are they charged per square foot or what? Was a price given?
36x-$25
x=the amount of dollars per square foot

Pay $25 lee than the calculated bill. You will need to buy 36 SQ ft of carpet. Get the price of one SQ ft of the carpet you want and multiply that price by 36. Then if you want someone to install the carpet it will cost you extra.
