Batting average is the amount of hits a batter gets per at-bat. An at-bat is a strikeout or any time the ball is put into play without a sacrifice.
On base average is similar, except it measures hits+walks+hit by pitches per plate appearance. A plate appearence is like an at-bat, but it also includes walks and hit by pitches.

On Base Percentage takes into account all of the ways a player can get on base, not just hits. On Base Percentage also includes walks, Hit by Pitch, Fielders Choice, errors, etc.

Batting Average is the rate at which you get a clean hit and reach base w/o errors, hit-by-pitch, and walks.
While On Base Percentage is the rate of how many times you reach bass on anything except on an error

BA is at-bats divided by basehits, period.
OBP is times reached base safely (by any means- hit, error, fielder's choice, hit by pitch, walk, or strikeout- yes that's possible) divided by at-bats.
Generally speaking, it's very difficult for hitters who strike out frequently to have good OBP's because there are so many different ways to reach base by simply hitting the ball, whereas reaching base via strikeout happens, but only as a fluke.

On-base percentage includes other ways of reaching base (hit by pitch, walk, error, etc) that batting average does not.

Batting average is a much less telling stat than OBP, because it doesn't factor in other ways of reaching base - namely, the walk.
Batting average just divides the number of hits by the number of at-bats, while OBP takes into account much more, and can be figured this way:
(H + BB + HBP) divided by (AB + BB + HBP + SF)
Most fans who possess any knowledge of the game realize that OBP (and really OPS) are much more important than batting average.

Batting average doesn't include walks or hit-by-pitch (or a number of other more obscure situations). OBP does.
