It depends on the food. It depends on the grounds.
If I drop a spoonful of gravy in the grass or dirt, its gone.
If I drop an apple or an orange, uncut, unopened on the floor, wipe it off and go on.
If I have a very clean floor and a very good piece of chocolate or meat falls to the floor, the time limit applies--because if I do it quickly, then I might not consider it dirty because the value of the morsel is so great in my mind. It isn't a distinct period of time, it is not giving myself time to persuade myself that it was dirty. If you have "floors clean enough to eat off of", then the dropped food might be worth salvaging--if you don't, I ain't eating it no matter how long or short the time is. (Its just a fun game we play)

What, you've never heard of the famous 5 second rule. See link below:
As for "what's wrong with food dropped on the ground." well, depends, to some degree, on "the ground."
But around our house, with 2 dogs and 1 cat, any food that hits the ground is usually gobbled up in less than 5 seconds anyway.

It is funny you ask, I was watching the morning news yesterday and they said you should never eat food that has fallen on the floor because of bacteria that could be harmful...
I myself have always used the 5 second rule.

Someone did studies on that,
RIGHT AWAY bacteria contaminates
the source, right away !!!!
All life is opportunistic toward
finding a place to call home or breed ...
A rain drop or dew on a plant is already
a place something is using for life to
continue ..... Nature works fast !!!

i have always heard 5 seconds. but, with 3 kids under the age of 9 ripping in and out all summer, and hardwood floors.......i say throw it away.
but, like the guy ahead of me, i have two shih tzu pups.....they are little Hoovers. food on the floor around here is a moot question.

It's always ok to eat--a little dog **** never hurt anyone. Think about it, veggies are grown in cow ****, meat is what **** runs through before it comes out the other end--what's on the ground, usually not even ****. Eat up.

as long as no ants, flys or flies eggs or on it. LOL
all kidding aside, if you pick it up immediately its ok. Actually I think we are to concerned about our food and if its got a bit of dirt on it. Heck, I swallowed a fly once, felt it tickle all the way down, it didn't hurt me. Go ahead, eat it.
