I was 9 years old & my mom went on vacation to NY (I was in FL) & left me in the house with my father, brother & 2 male cousins. Needless to say the day after she left I woke up with blood on my sheets & started crying, I think I stayed in my room locked in, for 3 hours before I went out to take a shower & get changed. I used toilet paper & paper towels folded up all day long & flushed them. I hid my sheets in my closet until around midnight when everybody was sleeping & brought them out to the garage & washed them myself so nobody would know. I *knew* what to do & what it was & everything else about a period, I just didn't know how to ask my dad to go get me pads (my mom had already had a hysterectomy [sp?] so she didn't have a period anymore). I always assumed (& so did she) that she would be home & able to get me some when I needed them.
I finally just let my dad in the room & wouldn't tell him why I was crying but made him bring me the phone so I could call my mom. I called her & she made me give him the phone & she asked him, it was soooo embarassing. Now (11 years later), I can ask my dad to go get me tampons & he'll go without any complaints & I don't feel weird about it.
My friend has an even worse story, she was at school when she started, & her chair was covered. It was awful, we covered her the best we could with our jackets going down the hall to get changed, but she hadta wear her gym shorts around school all day (her parents were out of town for the day) & everybody in her first period class (haha never thought about that "first period class") saw it happen. Nobody teased her suprisingly though & it didn't get around school until the next week & by then she was able to laugh it off better. :)

I got mine on my 10Th birthday. I woke up and I didn't feel any different until I went to use the bathroom and I realized I was bleeding. So I screamed and I started crying because I didn't know what to do. The bad thing about it was any only my stepfather was there because my mom had been in the hospital for two weeks and my aunt went to go pick her up so him, my cousins and my stepfather was the only ones there. He didn't know what to and I was still crying so he called my grandmother and she said she was coming with pads(never came until 1hr later). Then my cousins where looking at me crying, stepfather didn't know what to do, started having cramps. Still crying. Finally my stepfather thinks about calling my aunt and they are on the way home from the hospital with my mom so they stop and get pads. So my mom comes home to me crying and bleeding. When mom got home she told me why I was bleeding and everything I needed to know. My family still jokes me about that from this day. When everything is settled my grandmother comes.

I got mine in 5th grade during art class. I freaked out and was so embarrassed I didn't tell anyone for three days, until finally I ran out of clean underwear and had to tell my mom. Oh, womanhood. Such fond memories.
