In researching my family history the overwhelming reason was religious freedom. They were either Puritan, Quaker or Pilgrim. After they got here, they moved to different locations that were more hospitable to their creed.

The Norweigns were later for economic reasons.

As for the English, the general reason was that most were the second and third sons of a family where all the inheritance would go to the first born male. This is where most of the Orignal"thinkers" of the day came. Then others came as indentured servants trying to make a better life then what could be had back at home. As for other areas religious freedom played a bg roll as well

People who came willingly, emigrated for religious or economic reasons - Puritans, Quakers etc as has been mentioned. Also, the promise of land of their own or economic freedom enticed others, plus more came to escape whatever problems or lack of employment they had at home.

Of course, there were also colonies started as penal colonies: "The British used North America as a penal Colony through the system of indentured servants. Most notably, the Province of Georgia was originally designed as a penal colony. Convicts would be transported by private sector merchants and auctioned off to plantation owners upon arrival in the colonies. It is estimated that some 50,000 British convicts were banished to colonial America, representing perhaps one-quarter of all British emigrants during the eighteenth century." Wikipedia

Here is the Wikipedia link for Norwegian emigration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian-American#History
"Organized norwegian immigration to America began in 1825,..."But it was the writings of Ole Rynning, who traveled to the US on the Ægir in 1837 that energized Norwegian immigration....To a great extent, early emigration from Norway was borne out of religious persecution, especially for Quakers and a local religious group, haugianere.

Norwegian immigration through the years was predominantly motivated by economic concerns."

When you leave a country you emigrate. With hindsight only God knows why anyone should have wanted to go to the USA. Unfortunately most immigrants to the USA, (and that's most of the people in the USA) weren't able to see into the future - otherwise they might have stayed at home.

Actually, they emigrated, some of them, and for different reasons, though for many it was to escape religious persecution/discrimination. For others, it was to make a new start and/or a better life.
And at least a few were probably fleeing from the law.
