Europeans hate/abhor most USA Americans because they are so full of themselves! They come into town waving their high and mighty arses and thinking their sjit don't stink. They want us to jump up and down praising them for what their ancestors may or may not have done in WWII. When you visit their McChoke and Pukes, they are so fake happy while telling you to have a nice day. Plus of course, it is the home of Paris, Nicole, Jessica, Shakira, Brittney and Christina...wow such good role models!

You want to be treated with respect in Europe, tell them your are a Canadian American, but make sure it's English Canadian and not French Canadian. The French are also quite hated in Europe, but will always play second fiddle to USA Americans.

Some of the answers here show why people 'hate' Americans. They are arrogant and aloof and think that America is the saviour of the world. The reality is, America (white America) is only about 200 years old - there are countries which are thousands of years old and have done very nicely, thank you.

The US has become the bully boy of the world telling people what to do and how to do it. At one point, many people wanted to aspire to the "American dream", to be who and what you are, taking the lead from the land of opportunity. Since the end of the Cold War and the imbalance of power, instead of leading the world, America has chosen to trample all over it, sparking an illegal war, imposing its own values on countries with different cultural, political and social institutions, pro-democracy (western style) propaganda being thrust upon countries such as Cuba, even the arrogance here in London of the US embassy refusing to pay the congestion charge whereas all other foreign embassies are doing so.

The US sees itself above international law, it supports Israel in whatever Israel chooses to do even indirectly supporting Israel's flouting of every UN resolution it wants to, yet expecting all other countries to abide by whatever sanctions/resolutions are imposed, Guantanamo Bay, refusing to acknowledge the ICC (International Criminal Court), disrespect for the United Nations and so forth.

Many of the questions/answers on this site, to my mind, indicate the narrow view Americans have of the world we live in.

What can I say that's good? Americans are some of the most helpful people I've met when I have been to the US. It is the country I have visited the most. One of my friends is from NJ, now in Massachusetts, and we have been friends for nearly 30 years. America can lead the way in scientific and medical advances - as well as in education and technology and much of the world relies on this. But the foreign policy of the Bush administration and ignorance and disrespect of other cultures has led the US down a dark and dangerous path.

By the way, Europeans can hate each other, too - I think everyone hates the English (metaphorically, of course)!

Most europeans do not hate the americans. You are generalizing. If I were you I would take a good look at the people who say those hurtfull things to you and pooh pooh them off your shoulders. Tell them that most americans are kind hearted and friendly and will go out of their way to help one another, site WWII, 9-11 and New Orleans as examples. Rise tall and be proud of your heritage and don't let them bring you down my friend.

Because we are the biggest kid on the block and as a result we stick our noses in everyone elses business. Just like the Brits did when they were king of the hill. Sure wish we'd keep our noses clean though, I don't want to be spending dollar one in some other country.

But there are places that love Americans. The south of Italy, Siciliy love Americans.

Being English, I don't think that we think there is anything wrong with Americans in general. However, when I went to Germany, a lot of people seemed to hate Americans. I think it is because of American politics, especially the war in Iraq and everything.

Personaly I have no problems with Americans public, but there are a few things that get on my nerves, George Bush, how the hell did he get power! The war he started, which at first said it was all about 9 11, but later said it had nothing to do with it. The net neutrality thing going about, which will effect me, but I dont have a say because im not American. Oh yer, and why would do you need so many nukes? you can take out the earth 45 times over......why?
But apart from that i have no problem with Americans, it more about whos in control.

My guess would be because they disagree with the US government's policies and how the US kind of does what it wants, even if European powers disagree (i.e.~invading Iraq). The American tourist is probably viewed not as an individual, but as an extension of the country they hate.

Europe and the rest of the world do not hate americans, or america itself any more than they hate anyone else in the world. the reason for the general hatred towards america has to do with america's foreign policy. if the u.s world stop trying to place themselves in everyone's business and then imposing their way of life on other countries, then no one would really care about americans or what they do. it would be just normal to like or hate them as you please

I agree with the people that said it is our foreign policy that everyone hates, not us Americans. I think we are the blacksheep in the family of the world.
