First of all you have assumed that Voodoun is nothing but evil. Any form of magic can be taken in any direction that you may choose. Yoruba is not a faith it is a spiritual practice with the basis being in Nigeria. There are literally hundreds of dieties that are associated with it. The most notable being Olodumare, Elegua/Esu, Oya, Yemaya, Osun,Sango, Ochosi, Orunila. All of them have many different aspects and all have male and female aspects. As you know the African spirituality traveled out of its homeland to various places in the west. The various forms of Voodoun are derivative of this separation from the homeland. Many of the same dieties are utilized in these forms of spirituality as well. Yoruba has a growing following in the US as well as does African Hoodoo Rootwork. As I have said earlier any form of magic can be taken to a point of harming others. It is all about the practitioners intent. However it is my personal belief that this side should only be taken when it is a matter of self protection.

Voodoo is a religion just as any other, Hollywood has given it the bad name it has. Having Voodoo for a religion is not dancing naked under a full moon cutting the head off of a chicken and drinking its blood.
Marie Laveau http://home.comcast.net/~wendymae/marie_laveau.html was the most famous of the Voodoo religion. It has been said that if you go to her grave and make a red x on it and ask her for a favor, she will grant you that favor.

I practice Haitian based Vodou. Vodou is a religion not a magical system to be utilized. Vodou is about honoring your ancestors, serving the lwa, and praising Bondye (God). Haitian Vodou originated from slaves of Dahomey, Fon, Congo, Nago, and various other African tribes. The ones mentioned are the most influential in Vodou. I don't know about Yoruba religion. There is not much information on it.
