Or is that idea passé these days?

Hi,

A few years ago, I used to ask this question. I constantly strove for a fancier title, bigger office and more money. I am currently a VP at a Fortune 500 company, it it still doesn't matter.

Granted there are way more people below me in the org chart than above me, but life hasn't really changed. I still go to meetings, answer emails, and get assigned work. The only things have have changes are that my work (projects) are now bigger and I divide the work and delegate many responsibilities to others; however, I am ultimately still responsible for the work assigned to me.

Many people would consider me at or near the top of a corporate ladder, but even so there are always places for me to grow and advance my skills. Sometimes they are with my existing employer and sometimes not. Nowadays, I believe it is much more about career path than a simple corporate ladder.

Just my two cents,

Leo

Great question! This is what i tell anyone who is starting in the corporate world. This scenario applies to many career fields: The example will be McDonald's because every knows this company. Each step is not less than one year long.Only requires high school diploma and each step will have a pay increase.Start as a cashiers, then cook, assistant manager, manager, area manager, district
manager. College degree, move to a corporate office
position and keep going as far as your degree will allow....good luck.

Zero as there is no place for me to climb in my company which is a family-owned business. Those rungs are reserved for family members and friends of family, whether or not they are qualified, motivated, or have a work ethic. They've paid me just enough to keep me there for 3 years. BTW, I'm aggresively looking for another job!

Unless you are exceptional or have a title handed to you, you'll be climbing steps until the cows come home and be answering to puppets who have less skills than you.
Get out from underneath the man and build your own ladder or you'll be waking up one day several years later still asking yourself this question.

0!

I'm an artist, so I don't even have a ladder. It's more of a "King of the Hill" type of operation.
Look out, Chuck Close, I'm pushing your wheel-chaired caboose straight down!!
(j/k, he's one of my favorite contemporary artists! ;) )
