Easiest way is just to use a thumb drive. YDrag & drop your files (not programs) you can export your favorites, etc. or you can use the MS File and Settings transfer wizard.
There's also 3rd party software - like Aloha Bob that will transfer settings and some programs.
If you are going to have a wireless router connected to your desktop, you can always create a home network and just drag the files to your computer. Then there's always the cross-over cable (a special type of USB, I believe) but I would try the other things first.

You could get what is called a crossover cable and connect the two computers together. Go to control panel, network connectings and set up a network with the the Network connection wizard. Next use the files and settings transfer wizard. It is in: Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools. Just get the network going and then run the files and settings transfer wizard, from there it will allow you to transfer any of your files or even settings from another computer. Enjoy!

Get a router and network them together
Use a USB memory stick device such as a flash or jumb drive
Use an external USB hard drive
Email them from the PC to the laptop
OR use CD as you can not only move the files, but then keep the CDs as a backup of everything should your laptop dies.

You could use a CAT 5 CrossOver Cable - you can order one for $3.99 online http://shop2.outpost.com/product/3516624?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
if you can't find locally.
Or use a USB-USB Bridged Cable - though I haven't seen them for under $30.
Do NOT connect your computers together with a regular USB Cable - You could burn out your USB Ports or even power supplies!
You might also see if you could borrow a friends router.
After they are connected you can use the Network Setup Wizard or the File Transfer Wizard to move your files.

If you had a memory stick/usb jump drive, you could load them on there and transfer it via usb port. Wash your hands and you're done.
