Because language is a living thing that randomnly changes and evolves over long periods of time. Why else do you think Shakespheare is so hard to understand? You probably would have great difficulty speaking to anyone from 250 years ago, even if they spoke the same language you do now.

Well at least you can trace your real surname. I don't even know where my ancestrial home or people are.

The mixture of culture contributes to such changes. Dominate culture will sometimes be imitated or appeased by lesser cultural intities. Besides language and culture constantly evolved.

my surname changed when some of my relatives came to canada afew generations ago.. they had accents, and apparently when repeating their names to the officials here, it got written down incorrectly...

Some of my ancestors were uneducated,, others had to change it slightly to hide from anti-Irish sentiments.
