Couldn't you just walk along the sea floor if it's shallow enough and snorkel that way?

Sure, you could, but as you walk, you will tend to rustle up all the things on the bottom, making it hard to see anything. Swimming while snorkling is ALOT easier than regular swimming though. Give it a try.

1) If you walk on the bottom to see the fish, you will stir up the sand and possible kill what attracts the fish there in the first place. You wouldn't like Great Whites cr@pping in your living room, so don't mess up their homes.

2) To snorkel you don't technically have to know how to swim as long as you are wearing something buoyant to keep you on the surface and you can use your legs to propel yourself.

BUT

3) It is highly dangerous to take to the sea if you can't swim. Anything could happen. As a general rule, don't go more than ankle deep if you can't swim. Swimming is easy (you don't have to be an olympic swimmer - I am a good diver but a bad swimmer) and is useful from both a self-preservation and enjoyment point of view. Get lessons!

No, you don't have to swim. And you're right... if you're walking on the ocean floor, you just look down into the water. You'll just have to get used to the breathing aparatus, which can be a little bit of an adjustment if you're claustrophobic. Although it's not a big deal... pretty easy once you're used to it.

If you're going somewhere that requires you to snorkel far from shore, they normally take you on a boat and give you a PFD. You can just use it to float so it doesn't really require you to swim.

But usually water that's clear enough to snorkel in has a high salt content and you'll float easier anyway. It might be a good place to learn to swim!

Snorkeling is really fun... Hope you enjoy wherever you're going! Hope these tips help! :)

You sure do! You should avoid touching the bottom while you snorkel anyway. Swimming is an incredibly important thing to know how to do whether you're snorkeling or not.

You don't have to be able to swim, your body will float just fine with your head down laying on your stomach. If you have flippers, the worst swimmer in the world can swim fast with flippers. I'm not the greatest swimmer, but I do the snorkel thing every year without a life jacket for hours with no problems. It's a blast, enjoy yourself.

I am myself a diver and when i started out snorkling i actually could not swim.

But with a snorkle and divinggoiggles and some fins you actually do not have to be able to swim. since when snorkling your whole body is underwater yopu will be practicaky weightless and even more probably a lit positvie especially in salt water.

tip learn to snorkel first in shallow water and then gou out in deeper. if your not sure bring som buyancy material with you or where a wetsuit.

sure, but you will probably get a backache because you will have to bend over all the time to get your face in the water. You do realize that the snorkel is attached to a face mask right?

If its a snorkeling tour they will give you a life jacket. All you have to do is kick your feet. Its an insurance risk to them to send you out without one.
