Exact standard definitions:

1 statute mile = exactly 1609.344 meters
1 nautical mile = exactly 1852 meters

These basic conversion factors are exact,
by definition.

This means that the conversion factor between
statute miles and nautical miles is:

(1852 / 1609.344) = 1.15077944802

So

nautical miles = statute miles × 1.15077944802
or
statute miles = nautical miles / 1.15077944802
or
statute miles = nautical miles × 0.86897624190065

to sufficient accuracy.

Since the time factor (per hour) in the speeds are identical, it cancels out in the ratio.

Therefore, the same conversion factor used to convert statute miles into nautical miles can be used to convert statute miles per hour into nautical miles per hour (knots). it's the same factor in either case for conversions either way.

1 Knot = 1.136 Miles
1 Mile = 0.88 Knots

KNOT is a term for speed (distance per unit time).
MILE is a unit of measurement for distance ... hence no equivalent.

However, "knot" refers to the distance traveled by a vessel (on or under the water's surface) and is one nautical mile per hour.

If we consider the time period as an hour, the vessel moves one nautical mile. This translates into 1.852 km = 2025.37 yards = 1.15078 miles.

Using the definition of a nautical mile for distance at sea, the challenge was to measure speed -- i.e. what is the ship's speed in nautical miles per hour? (By the way, the nautical mile is about 1.15 larger than the "statute" mile used by land lubbers.) Since [speed] = [distance] divided by [time], if we measure a small distance (or length) in a small time we can do the math and figure our speed.

The device that sailors used to make their speed measurement was called the "chip log." Chip as in chip of wood, and log as in to record in a log. The chip was a wedge of wood about 18" in size; it was tied to one end of a rope on a large spool. The rope had knots tied into it about every 47'3" (more about how that was calibrated below).

A knot is a unit of measure used in calculating speed and is equal to one nautical mile per hour. One nautical mile is equal to 2,000 yards while a standard mile is equal to 1,760 yards. When I served in a submarine in the USN we used a "three minute rule" to determine rate of approach to a given point or target: given your speed in knots, in three minutes you will travel that many hundreds of yards. For example if your speed is 10 knots then in three minutes you will travel 10 x 100 yards = 1,000 yards

Can't answer that. Knots are nautical miles per hour: speed. Miles are distance.
