A great tragedy. The word generally means "an act of great destruction and loss of life".
The Holocaust was a program carried out by Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich (Nazi Germany) before and during WW2. It was an ethnic cleansing of all non-Aryan people, categorized as "racially inferior" or "undesirable".
Tens of millions of people were killed, including Gypsies, Jews, Poles, Serbs, homosexuals, priests, and many other groups.

It was when Hitler and the Nazi's killed 6 million Jew and also Gypsies and priests and those who defied the Nazis. It happened during WW2. It really did happen. Hitler loaded all the Jews into concentration camps used them for forced labor and then killed them, babies, old and infirm first then workers later. The used poison gas and fire and firing squads to kill them. They also conducted scientific and medical experiments on the Jews because he thought they were inferior and said they were ruining Germany and used this to make the people go along with it.
My best friends grandmother was a holocaust survivor and I saw where she was branded on her arm. She told us how the Nazis used to throw babies in the air for target practice.
Those who say it didn't happen are anti - semitic and they want to fool others into believing that the Jews lied about it. But there are mass graves etc to mark what happened.
The meaning of the word holocaust is a terrible destruction and it comes from a burnt sacrifice.

The Holocaust was when hitler got all the SS to gather up all the jews and put them in all in different concentration camps where they were starved and tortured. A lot were forced to do rigerous tasks like building and assembling things in large numbers. The prisoners either died by disease, starvation, being tossed into a fire pit or shot. All the victims were shaved to make clothes for soldiers, they got their clothes and possessions taken, women were often raped by Nazi soldiers, and much more done to them.

Holocaust, when spelled with a capital H, means when Nazi Germany killed millions of Jews. When you spell holocaust with a small h; it means the mass killing of a specific kind of people.

Like the first guy said, many people believe it only happened to those of the Jewish faith in WW2. It has happened to many other groups of people as well. It is usually referred to by the perpetrators as a "cleansing". It is mass murder.

The term actually means "great fire," and the phrase was coined during World War II when Hitler was rounding up Jews, putting them in concentration camps, torturing them, killing them, and then burning them in ovens (hence the "great fire.") It now refers to any act of mass-genocide.
