Because their union is probably one of the most twisted in soap opera history. Luke raped Laura. They ended up married, have two kids, and years and years of drama! They had a fairytale like wedding some 20+ years ago, and folks have been rooting for them every since.

Flashback to the 70s for some of us.
the shortest answer is that the Luke and Laura plot included not just romance,melodrama, betrayal, kidnapping, but also science fiction, and plots to take over or destroy the world. this was when a LOT of baby boomers were in college - and Luke and Laura were roughly the same age.
It was the first time that late teenagers/early twenty-somethings were MAJOR characters in a soap opera, as opposed to the troubled children of main characters.
It became sort of a fad at colleges. It was good writing, and you can not imagine how complex the plots were.
