My friend just lost her baby because of umbilical cord entanglement. Her first daughter had the cord wrapped around her neck too. I was wondering what causes this.

I think it is caused by the position of the child at birth.. They can not be prevented but the death of the child can... if the doctor, nurse, or whoever, present is alert enough to know it immediately.

It happened to my 2nd child a girl..Fortunately, I was there,, she came out still wrapped wih the placenta and when the cord was removed from her neck,,, she was already darkblue and the midwife said, she is dead. I could not accept it. so, I sucked her nose and mouth and got all the fluids inside of her,, and she came on breathing.

There is no known reason for this to happen, other than the cramped space for the baby to move. It is quite common, but only presents a problem when the cord is pulled tight or becomes entangled in a knot. There are wives tales that say if you lift your arms above your head too much or stretch too much, it causes it, but those are wives tales and simply not true. There is no way to prevent it unfortunatly. I am very sorry to hear about your friends loss.

The movements of the baby is what wraps the umbilical cord around it's neck. There's not much that can be done to prevent it.

There is really no way to prevent it. The baby moves all around and can tie the cord in knots or twist himself up in the cord.

The one thing you CAN do is pay attention to how much your baby moves every day. If the movement decreases or you don't notice movement, drink a big glass of OJ and lay down for at least 30 mins and count each movement you feel then. Kick counts can be important in the final couple of months in making sure baby is doing OK.

A baby can easily get itself wound up in the cord near the end..they run out of room, and turning over can get ir wrapped around their neck.

I'm not sure what exactly causes it. Also I dont' think there's anything that can be done to prevent it. There are wives tales that say reaching your arms over your head will cause it but that's just an old tale. The cord is not connected to your arms. So sorry for your friends loss.

the baby is always moving in one way or another.when he/she gets over active and does flips the cord doesnt move out of the way and thats how the cord can wrape around the baby.most times around the neck but it can also wrap around legs waist...anywere really.there is alot of room for the baby to move around in and also babys who flip alot can put knots in the cord...you just have to have faith that everything will be fine because there is nothing you can do to stop it or prevent it,its how it is.

When the baby grows, her space to grow doesn't. She is very cramped for space in that tiny little bag of warmth, I am sorry to hear of her loss.

its caused by the cramped space of the uterus, and it happens to almost all babys. but for a baby to be harmed by it is rare. normally it is simply unwound when the baby is born

it can not be prevented

It happens. Unfortunately, it can't be prevented. But the other answer is correct, it does happen more than you think, but babies work themselves out of it.
