I bought a Fujitsu S6240 laptop at the start of the the year for school use. However, I usually run it on AC power alone (battery taken out). This is also when I'm using it at home. I would use the battery only like once a week or so when I'm out. Will it harm my battery if I don't use it for long periods of time?

They say that it is better to run it low, then recharge it.

Who knows for sure.... as long as the battery doesn't explode.

I think batteries have a 'shelf life' of only so long so you should at least try using it every few weeks as battery alone. Then completely drain the battery before you plug it back in. It will keep the battery lasting longer if dont charge it until it is completely dead. (Same as with cell phones, or anything with batteries.)

The disuse of the battery can cause the chemicals in the battery to crystallize, rendering the battery useless long before the end of life of battery ~2 -3 years.

yes there might be a leakage
but its usally good practice to not keep constantly charging ur battery as it reduces it life span
but, do this every 3-4 months
charge ur battery all the way and let ur machine run on the battery all the way till its out of charge(this is called a power cycle...improves ur battery life span)

you might as well use your battery because they are made to be used alot. Use ac adapter to charge the laptop or when near a ac plug plug in the laptop and use it.
