Would defragmenting my hard drive about once per week cause anything? I believe it is recommended that daily users of the computer defragment once a month, but I have a habit of doing this more frequently.

I would go with the recommend of defragmenting at least 1 everyother week for daily users. I have been told the same thing, I am a daily user and I do this at least 1 or 2 times a month and my system is fine. In the mean time of doing that I run my Ad Aware, Spy bot S&D, and AVG to make sure all is well with my system. You don't want to defrag your system alot unless you are deleting alot of programs from your system that is what that does it just makes sure that all the programs are together to run more smoothly. Scan Disk and Defrag do not take care of any Spy ware or viruses or things of the sort if that is why you are defragging more often.

Once a month is not often enough, unless your disk usage is very low.
The actual interval really depends on how much, and how, you use your machine. The "analyze" phase of the defragger will tell you how badly crumbled it is, and that will give you a guide.
It's generally recommended to keep the fragmentation under 10% if you can.

I have a weekly routine, which includes backups, file cleanup and defrag, on all our machines. and that seems to work for me.

The down-side is that it will take your machines out of service for as long as it takes to defragment them. In a business, that may be an issue. In the home, that may cause withdrawal symptoms among MySpace addicts... :-)

at the instant that's not probable needed to defrag your complicated drives, fairly while you're utilising a in demand working gadget. in case you DO defrag your drives then frequently you're able to do it it any time, nonetheless the less archives you have locked open mens the extra archives that would fairly be defragged. the perfect time for this, of course, is a boot-time defrag, earlier the working gadget even starts. you will possibly want a DOS based defrag application to try this. in case you have homestead windows, I beleieve the offered defrag application can schedule this for you. wish this facilitates.

No, only if you have very limited space on your hard drive. But it is recomended to run a scan disk first to check for bad sectors.
