Use borax on the rugs then vacuum it after a day. Make a border around your house using lemon juice and cayenne pepper - this stings the ants so they won't come in. Make sure your food is sealed and not accessible to the ants - especially sugar. And last make sure no water is leaking - ants mainly leave their nests for water and if it was attacked. If you don't have any accessible water the ants can't live there and will not set up a nest.

I have always had luck with ant stakes. They are metal or plastic stakes, about 5 inches long, with poison in them that is not likely to be accessed by your kids, especially if you put them in out of reach places. Probably sold in Walmart and some grocery stores. The ants take the poison back to the colony and everybody dies.

I have the same Problem every summer they pour in from my patio. What I do is put a line of dish soap across the bottom of the threshold. and they just wont pass it. I believe they stick to it and then it kills them. I do the same thing on the window sills. Its also helpfull for cleaning. I just throw water over it and with a brush I just wash it off the patio and the same for the windows, they have drains and it just runs right out of them. My children are older, just keep an out for them touching the soap.

Add some sugar to ant killer when you go to bed. The ants take it back to the nest and everything dies. If you are nervous, clean it up first thing in the morning.
