distressing is when you do something to make an item look older or worn. examples would be:
sanding with fine grit sandpaper
inking with an ink pad
crumpling or ripping paper
fraying the ends of ribbon
using crackle medium before painting
rubbing fine steel wool over a photo
you can even combine techniques to get different looks. like wad up a piece of paper then sand or ink some edges. ink some paper with different colors dye based inks and then mist with water to blend. it's a lot of fun!
if you do a search for scrapbook distressing or heritage scrapbook, I'm sure it'll come up with some great ideas for you!

DISTRESSING .. its making something look old/antique... I do it by getting a use teabag and dabbing the paper with it, give a sepia type finish, then if the edges have been torn I go along them with a felt tip pen which seeps into the paper making it look even older. Ive used allsorts to change how paper looks, diluted coffee is another way, mascara ran down the edges.. have fun trying anything .. but try it on blank paper not any you have written or printed on..first to get used to doing it.. Have fun... just remember you dont have to spend pounds and pounds on scrapbooking and cardmaking.. get creative..use whats around you.

The way I scrap books is like this.
I arrange everything in piles completely around me on the floor
- a supply pile -- scissors, glue, stickers
- a cute embellishment pile
- a pile of scraps -- ticket stubs, etc.
- pictures
I open up to a page, and grab things out of the pile and arrange them, until the page looks even. Then I glue the stuff on.
I don't draw off a particular style. Some pages are good simplistic, if a card is very large and very ornate, it's okay for it to take up the whole page. But other pages are almost collages.
I tend to have themes for my scrapbooks.
Some dollar trees sell acid-free glue, and acid-free stickers that are pretty nice.
I save old magazines, and rip pages or things I like out of them. You can get a spray at a craft store that neutralizes the acid in things that aren't acid free.
Sometimes Creative Memories offers scrapbooking workshops.
There is a scrapbooking magazine. I don't subscribe to it, but it looks somewhat interesting.
Just have fun with it, and don't stress about it or think too hard. It'll just come to you.
