I just don't get it. I thought I knew a great deal of baseball rules but now im just puzzled. Teams have been trading after the deadline and I can't figure out why. I'm sure everyone else knows I'm just a flippin retard-o.

You have until September 1st to make trades to finalize the playoff rosters.
July 31st is the trading deadline where players dont have to clear waivers. If you trade a player between August 1st and September 1st, they have to clear waivers to play on the playoff roster.
If you trade after September 1st, the player can play for you the remainder of the season but he isnt eligible to play for you in the post-season.

Because after the trading deadline, teams can trade, but the players have to clear waivers....so all teams with worse records than the padres had to pass on wells in order for SD to get him. If the royals wanted him, they could of got him, but they would have to pay his salary and still give boston something for a trade.
If a team like the Red Sox wanted to get Soriano, and washington agreed to do it, too many teams would claim the fonz, and a trade couldnt be done.....thats why all the trades that happen after the deadline are crappy. because other teams could care less about the player and not want to claim them.

If a team has no chance to make it to the playoffs & they have players that do not have not clear waivers, they can trade them to other teams after July 31st. Here is a Texas Ranger press release that might explain it better.

they can only trade when a player clears waivers... its done now because waiver trades can only occur until the 31st of august.... clearing waivers means all teams have to pass on player, if they dont they can be forced to trade for a guy they dont want to block another team from getting him, like the yanks getting canseco a couple years ago
