Walmart has some good laptops around $500. Circuit City and Bestbuy have a few around $600, but if you hit a sale, they might be less. I have also seen decent computers at pawn shops, but I really dont want to take a risk with them.

For internet, IM, email and word processor? Just get one from Dell, I'm sure you could find one for 300-400 dollars. If you get one from E-Bay chances are it's not going to work, E-Bay can be deceiving.

Ebay! But it might not work, so maybe a second hand shop where you can try them out first might be best.
