back then, like has already been said, there were a few games that could save, but it had nothing to do with the system. before memory cards, a few games could save on a battery inside the game. games that did this include final fantasy, zelda, zelda II, and i'm sure there are others...perhaps willow? i'm not sure on that one. but some games, like faxanadu, would give you complicated passwords instead, that would determine what items/money you had.

with super nintendo and sega, there was more room inside the cartridge to place a battery. but since it was mostly an age of fighters and side scrollers, most sega games didn't have a reason to save. sega wasn't big with the rpgs, but the ones they did have, they could save.

on snes, though, there were many more games that had the ability to save, mostly rpgs, and even some side scrollers, like super mario world. however, mega man X used the old password system instead of a save feature, which doesn't make sense, because then i could potentially play your saved game..

i might be wrong, but i believe that N64 was the first system to save on an external memory chip. some games saved on file - ocarina of time. but some saved to the memory card you place in your controller - ogre battle 64

It depends on what game you are playing. RPG games like Final Fantasy can be saved, but not games like Mario Brothers
