trying to figure out exactly what the hole they were digging was actually used for? was it a back up escape? was it to hide weapons? what was it for and how was it used?

they tell you in the movie, he was in their for ages and it was a latrine.

The hole was used as a hideout for the lead bank robber. He lived in it for a week so the police wouldn't be able to find him. Remember the whole think with the jumpsuits? The other robbers escaped in those, and the lead guy had to hideout or they would've gotten him. At the end he walks out, and into a car with the other robbers, and no one suspected a thing... it was the perfect robbery.

If I remember correctly, it was for the "ringleader" to hide in and wait for the hold up to end, everyone to leave the bank, and for the leader to walk right out through the front door unnoticed, just as he said he would, when bank operations returned to normal.

It was a s*** hole. The guy (Clive Owen) had to live, eat, sleep and p*** in that tiny space. He needed somewhere to go to the loo.

IT WAS THE ALTERNATE WALL THEY WERE BUILDING...THEY GUY STAYED BEHIND THE WALL FOR LIKE A WEEK TILL EVERYTHING COOLED DOWN WITH THE MONEY...THEN HE JUST WALKED OUT OF THE BANK
