Steroids are a class of molecule found in humans and other organisms. They are hormones - molecules released by one cell to pass a signal to another cell or set of cells. The cells receiving the signal have a very specific molecule on their outer membrane called a receptor which specifically binds one kind of steroid by fitting together like puzzle pieces.

There are lots of different steroids that control different body responses. Some are involved in reproduction (estrogen in female testosterone in males), some are involved in muscle building and other metabolic pathways (corticosteroids).

A steroid is a lipid characterized by a carbon skeleton with four fused rings. All steroids are derived from the acetyl CoA biosynthetic pathway. Their most important role in most living systems is as hormones. In human physiology and medicine, the most important steroids are cholesterol, the steroid hormones, and their precursors and metabolites. In the bloodstream steroids are bound to carrier proteins.

Steriods are different things... they can be used as performance enhancers or for medical use as a way of fighting off or avoiding something. Also people who try to change genders take steroids as well as hermaphadites to become only one gender. It doesn't change you compltly but the "side effect" swing one way or another.
