I mean just by being born we are polluting, every breath we take, every peice of food we eat, every journey we take, either by car, rail or plane. Every time we sit at our computer or watch TV. Or even use a lamp to read a book.

It seems inmpossible.

It does seem monumental, but enviroment consciousness can work. We can't do it for everyone else, but it is possible to reduce your damage to the enviroment to nil. I mean, America is responsible for the huge majority of the waste in the world - I heard the statistic 80% this year in a study is American waste. It's not because we're more technologically advanced than other countries - we're comprable to many Asian, European, and other technologies. It's because we've never successfully made a serious ethical arguement that convinced the mass public. So we've got to opt for the slow change...one person at a time.

Yeah, we're ripping this planet to shreds with our breathing, but it's a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE sphere we are riding on.

Every effort slows down the mess.
Every thought slows it down.

Strange as it is, the SMART folks are having fewer kids, while the dumb, polluting, wasteful types are just crankin' 'em out! Maybe the new generation will learn good habits off TV?

Those of us that worry figure it's just a countdown until it's so bad we'll have no choice. Big business just gets bigger, and lots of money means lots of opportunities to keep lobbyists in Washington and fight new pollution restricitons, all so a few rich freaks can have one more summer trip to buy shoes in Italy.

But then there's Japan, who out of pure necessity of SPACE simply made recycling mandatory at one point. Maybe we are going to reach that point as well -- but it will be pretty pathetic if we wait that long.

One of the reasons I stay in this very small apartment complex is that, here in Phoenix, if the complex is 4 units or smaller, they provide recycling bins. So those larger cheaper complexes are OUT if I want to keep recycling, since they just don't provide it. Again, the influence of money. Bit at least I do what I can.

If you're REALLY interested, you will become part of groups that fight for new laws that change the way we pollute. That's how it happens, through laws, not through worries.

And, by the way, through prayer or meditation, not through expecting the worst. So, do what you will, because you're aware, and because you DO care...

:)

Yeah but if you done things like switch off your TV at the wall rather than leave it on standby, only put enough water in the kettle as needed. Recycle as much as possible, use the car/transport only when neccesary it will make a huge difference. If we all gave up the planet would be dead in no time

No, you are not apart from nature, you are a part of it. You should neither seek to dominate, control or despoil it; nor avoid it or avoid using it and imagine you don't have a right to exist.
You are an animal, the same as all the other animals on the face of the planet. Enjoy your life and don't feel guilty.

UNtil America and China sign up for the Kyoto Treaty, recycling your tin cans and newpapers won't make much difference to unthinkable amount of polution these countries are pumping out!

You can try and it might soothe your concience.....but realistically...your not making that much difference!
