Because at first the relationship is thrilling and you are experiencing all new things. This person is completely different than you...they are showing you new things, making you think differently, making you feel differently, opening you up to new experiences, new adventures.
Trust me, it doesn't last. My ex-husband was the very definition of my opposite. Where I was shy, he was out-going, I preferred staying home and renting a movie, he liked going out to bars and/or parties, I liked eating dinner at home, he liked restaurants. The list goes on.
At first it seemed fun. I did new things, he always made me laugh, there was never a dull moment. But then the opposites start getting to you little by little. It starts out small and it is a snowball effect. You find yourself getting annoyed that the person can't just be like you, or like the same things, etc. Before you know it, you are both unhappy.
Don't get me wrong. I don't believe you would be happy with someone exactly like yourself either. You definitely need some things to be different. Just not everything.
Perhaps the opposites attracting is more an infatuation/lustful concept than an enduring relationship. Ultimately, you want someone you can relate to. Not someone who will always want the opposite of what you do.

I don't mean to quibble, but "never" couldn't be true. Are you saying that out of the billions of opposite attractions throughout history, none of them have ever lasted? I'm not even convinced that most do not last.

Because opposites "attack" not "attract." What looks like a challenge stays a challenge and becomes more annoying with time. Best to know yourself and what you like (activity, traveling, socializing) and find that in your bf/gf or it will not work.

Its the sexuality and danger of having someone total different from you thats appealing but then after a while you get tired of not having anything in common and split.
