I would say "no". It is not unusual for a person to call a company and ask if they have openings. I have not gotten any negative experiences doing this. I have inquired and usually they say no or they ask for my resume through fax. However, I will say (from personal experience) it has not worked for me in terms of getting an interview. I have had a lot more success applying to jobs online.
Before you call, I would try to check the internet and see if they have a website. Look to see if they have a online job application submittal system or contact e-mail in which you can send your resume and cover letter. If the company has a website, they usually have a careers or job section where you can see and usually apply to their job openings. If they do not have a website, I would then call if you are really interested in them.

No...as long as you don't try to get hired over the phone. It might help if you asked for a specific position....eg waitress or whatever you are truly seeking. If they say no or you just want to work there THEN ask if they have any positions available.
Ask when you can apply....restaurants are less busy about 2pm. The phone work in this case is a good thing!

NO it is not rude to call a place to see if they are hiring. IF they say yes then it is better for you to go in person to find out more details. However don't sound to dispirit on the phone or ask to many question save them until you get there.

I don't think that it's rude just because it may not be listed doesn't mean that they are not hiring. The only thing that they can say is yes or no. Right! Whether it is listed or not.

I dont think it is rude some times the place might ask you to come in to fill out an app that and if gives you the chance to ask ? about the company that you might not know what they do there

No!! It shows incentive. Ask for the employment section or human resources. Know the company, and convince them you know. Make sure that you know what kind of position you are looking for, and be specific. If all goes well, you may be asked in for an interview. Good luck.

no its not rude but even with the cost of gasoline and your time it would be better if you dressed the part and went into the particular place and asked in person...you never know when the person walking out as you were walking in just left an opening!

no, as long as you dont call during their busiest time of the day... (ie if its a restaraunt, dont call during lunch or dinner)
its best to go in person and ask to speak to the manager, and even if they arent hiring leave your resume with them... incase they need to fill a position in the next few months then they already have you on file.. =) goodluck

Its quite proper to ring a company and ask if they are hiring workers.. Seems like common sense to me...

No, it is not considered rude, so go ahead and call. You may be surprised if they are hiring and ask you to interview.
