Yes. That is of course if it has available slots. You might currently be using two 128 mb sticks instead of 1 256 mb stick and an open stick. In which case removing 1 128 and adding the 256 would give you 384 mb.

Yes! But it doesn't mean that it will all be available for you to use. You will usually see at the very begining of startup that your PC is allocating some of your RAM to video! You can adjust this in your system bios, but lowering it would give you poorer graphics resolutions. So, if you are currently sharing 32 or 64 MB of system ram to video, leave the settings where it is and you will have the benefit of the additional remaining RAM. This will tipically make your PC start up faster then before the new RAM and will also allow processes to run faster because the system can write more processes to memory to execute them.

Yes it will , But perhaps not 512mb of free ram as your graphics card may use shared memory so the ammount would be decreased by the amount of ram used by the card i.e if you have a 64mb shared graphics card you would have 448mb of free useable ram.

wow some people are quick , someone else said all that as i was typing it out.

Yes, you will get 512MB. but, nowaday, laptop always have shared graphic memory. So depend on the memory size you allocated for your graphic card, you will get lesser memory as your RAM.

eg, if you set 64MB as your Graphic Ram, you will get
512 - 64 = 448MB

And you can check you laptop limit. If allow, why don;t you upgrade a 512MB instead?

Yes. If you pay someone else to do the job - and since its a laptop I would - why not find out whats the maximum RAM your motherboard can take, and how much would it cost to get up to 1 gig?

Memory is available in modules. Yes adding 256mb would give you 512mb. However, memory is cheap now and you should consider 1024mb. This is assuming that your computer has the slots to clip the models into the board, most computers now have but older one may not.

Yes it will, but as others have already said, why not go for more. (You may need to check, first, how much RAM you can succesfully install.)

Generally speaking, the more RAM you add the faster it will operate.

Yes. While you're at it, why not add 512 to give you 768?
