Well someone has no idea what they are talking about, sounds like SOMEONE has been repo'd before. To start with you just do not "take the wrong car" you have to match VIN's then you have to call it into the police, but after owning a successful repo business for over 10 years I understand I still have a lot to learn maybe I should sell out and go to 7/11. There is a BIG difference in a repo company and a "local tow truck company" very seldom do the 2 ever meet. If that was a true statement with 500 tow truck companies in any major metropolitan area, there would be no need for repo companies would there? The insurance is not the same, the bonds are not the same. Most tow trucks are not set up to repo. There is a difference, he may have not caught it as his car was screeching down his driveway, I am sure he meant well.
If you want to get into the business (You did not say what state you are in) to find out what the name of the local repo companies are call the auto department of the police department, they are the ones who take the calls from the Field Adjusters (repo people) and they will have the names of the companies. There are a couple of larger companies that you want to stay away from. One begins with a C and the other with an F.
When you get your list call and ask to speak to the office manager. Be honest with him/her about your tow truck experience if any. I have both Dynamic as well as "sneakers". The Dynamics are like a regular tow truck in a lot of respects, with the exception it has no recovery abilities. It will have the boom and the wheel lift. More companies are leaning towards these because there is less damage to the bumper of the unit you are taking. However, the Sneakers are a pick up truck, I use Ford F-350's because they can lift almost anything. The boom lays down flat in the bed of the truck. When you locate your unit, you have to raise the boom and lower it, all done by a hand held cab control, then you have to go out and set your chains. When you back up to the unit you have to get out and chain the axle and then raise the unit, which can be done as you are driving off. I like the sneaker better for my personal use because you can drive around and people who are in default will not recognize you as a repo truck. You can also have wheel lifts installed on these if you want to. This type of set up tends to do a bit more bumper damage and you have to work quicker because you have to physically lie on the ground to chain up.
Most companies will start you off on a % basis. I pay 75.00 a unit and another 10.00 for the keys, even if the guys go back to the office and cut the keys. The normal rate is 55.00 to 75.00 depending on the company and their clientele.
Other things you should ask about is if you get paid for door knocks? That means you have drove by the address at least 2 times and have to go to the door and demand the unit.
Do you get paid to trace skips? A skip occurs when someone moves and you have to track them down. If you do not get paid to skip, how long does it take the company to skip a person? If you are getting paid by the unit you do not want to get tied up with a company that gives you 20 accounts a night to run, and you start ruling out the addresses only to find out that it takes them 3 weeks to start the skip.
Don't be afraid to ask them who are some of their clients. FMC (Ford Motor Credit) and other well known companies are a good sign, if they start telling you a bunch of those you work you ride places, keep looking my friend. People that can not get regular financing and go to those places are a pain in the butt to find, the law will always be one step a head or behind you looking for these people.
Ask them if you have to do the recovery report. That means when you secure the unit at their lot do you have to get out and write down everything that you see wrong with it? Do you get paid for that? I pay 15.00 for a recovery report, some do not pay at all.
Ask them if you get C.A.R.S. Certified (a 3 hour test on repo laws) if you have the chance to make more money. I pay my 3 guys that are C.A.R.S. Certified an extra 400.00 a month bonus.
Ask them about innovatory. Do you have to innovatory your units? This is a very disgusting job. About 80% of the units we pick up (we do about 1000 units a month) are so gross on the inside it would make a maggot puke. I pay a guy to innovatory because it is so gross the guys just do not want to mess with it.
Ask them if you get paid extra to take units to the auction. Some places pay and some do not, A fair pay is 15.00 a unit if the auction is less than 20 minutes away, if it is more than fair pay is about 20.00. If they have a flatbed to take units to the auction ask them if you get paid for both (you bed one and tow the other) or if you just get paid for 1.
After training if you have hooked up with a good company you should bring in about 2,000.00 every 2 weeks, more if you work more hours obviously.
Find out if you have an assigned truck or if you share a truck. If you have an assigned truck you can work pretty much your hours, if you share then you have to work their hours.
Ask them about AWD's. Do they carry dollys on the units or do you have to locate the unit and go back to the office for dollys. You have to flatbed or dolly AWD's. You can not tow them.
This is pretty much a word of mouth industry. If someone goes to Joes company and screws up units, causes damage to the truck, doesn't work, lies on his field reports, it gets around and it gets around fast. Once you get that kind of name, you are pretty much out of the ball park in that town anyway.
I am going to pre warn you that you will meet the dredge of society on this job. Liars, thief's and a little bit of everything else.We just repo'd a unit that had a ½ pound of weed in the trunk, the police went over to talk to that fellow. People think they know the repo laws but they have no idea.
Everyone: A) Just sent the payment in, B) Is going to call their attorney, that is my personal favorite. They can not afford a 200.00 a month car payment BUT they have an attorney on retainer, or C) Is going to call the cops because you just have stolen their car. As long as you have the order of repo and the VIN numbers on the paperwork and on the dash match, they can call the cops till their fingers turn blue and fall off.
Always make sure to call the unit in as a repo within the first hour. NEVER repo off of a tag number even if the tag number you have on the unit match, always get out and check the last 5 of the VIN.
Some folks think that they can cover the vin and you can not take the car. Call the police and have them run the tag if you do not have the computer in your truck (we do but not everyone does) have them match the tag number on the car against the VIN on your paperwork. If they match you then can break into the car and remove whatever is blocking the VIN and check it that way.
Lastly never carry a dog or a weapon. If the police have to come out, you want them to go to jail, not you. In 10 years I have never had a guy go to jail. Hollywood and some recent "Reality TV" shows portray this business in the wrong light. I have been shot at several times, but you know what? I got the unit and the guy with the gun got the attempted murder charges.
That's pretty much the basics you will need to know when they give you a quick phone quiz. If you need to know anything else do not hesitate to e-mail me @ movingthestarz@yahoo.com
Good luck and pick a winning company, you can make the bucks with the right guy. Last month (August and in March) my little company beat every other company in my area, it doesn't have to be a big company, just one with a good reputation and one that wants to see you succeed! Because face it, if you are not making money, neither is the owner of the company.

Do you really want to be hated and despised? Any used car lot repos cars. Most legitimate loan companies just use a local wrecker service.
BTW, most repo guys who just do that for a living are scumbags who will repo on a whim and usually get sued over and over again as they violate peoples rights and when they get the wrong car, or take a car because of the word of a scumbag used car dealer, they go to jail for stealing.
If you really want to go to jail just rob a 7-11 or something.
